Zonguldak and Ereğli: terminals and cargoes
The coast around Zonguldak is Turkey's coal country and home to one of its largest integrated steel plants at Karadeniz Ereğli. Most ships here carry ore, coal or steel.
The main terminals
| Terminal | Where | Typical cargoes |
|---|---|---|
| Erdemir Port | Karadeniz Ereğli | Integrated steel plant: iron ore and coal in, steel products out |
| Zonguldak Port | Zonguldak city | Coal and general cargo |
| Power plant jetties | Çatalağzı and along the coast | Coal for the power plants |
| Filyos Port | Filyos, Çaycuma | Multipurpose: bulk and general cargo |
A rough guide only: most terminals handle more than what is listed, and the cargo mix changes with trade, markets and sanctions. Your agent will know what a berth is taking at the moment.
What arrives and what leaves
Iron ore and coking coal come in for the steel plant, and flat steel products go out. Steam coal is imported for the power plants on the coast. General and bulk cargo for the region passes through the Zonguldak and Filyos ports.
Surveys on a typical call
Ore and coal ships usually need draft surveys, and often sampling and quality checks. See the coal, ore and draft survey guides.
Practical notes
- The Black Sea coast is exposed, and winter storms can hold up berthing and surveys at anchor.
- Name the port in your request: Ereğli, Zonguldak and Filyos are an hour or more apart by road.
