Mersin: terminals and cargoes

Mersin is Turkey's largest port on the Mediterranean and one of its busiest container gateways. Most traffic goes through one large multipurpose port in the city, with smaller terminals along the coast.

The main terminals

TerminalWhereTypical cargoes
Mersin International Port (MIP)Mersin cityContainers, general cargo, Ro-Ro, dry bulk such as grain, cement and coal, liquid bulk such as vegetable oils and chemicals

A rough guide only: most terminals handle more than what is listed, and the cargo mix changes with trade, markets and sanctions. Your agent will know what a berth is taking at the moment.

What arrives and what leaves

Mersin serves a large hinterland, including transit cargo for neighbouring countries. Containers dominate, with fresh fruit and vegetables going out in reefers. Grain, vegetable oils, fertilizer, steel and project cargo come in and go out through the multipurpose berths.

Surveys on a typical call

Bulk carriers with grain or other dry bulk usually need draft surveys, often with hold cleanliness checks before loading. Container and general cargo bring damage surveys, tally and lashing checks. Liquid bulk such as vegetable oil needs ullage and sampling. See the draft survey and grain guides.
